Enjoy a glacier hike on the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue a part of Mýrdalsjökul
Enjoy a safe and easy, guided glacier hike on the glacial outlet of Mýrdalsjökull known as Sólheimajökull.
This is a “meet on location” tour in which you will be meeting your guides at the Parking area in front of Sólheimajökull glacier 20 minutes before departure.
On this glacier walk you get to explore the wonderland of ice sculptures, water cauldrons, ridges and deep crevasses on the breathtaking Sólheimajökull glacier. While enjoying all the features of the glacier and its spectacular surroundings, you will learn more about the behaviour of glaciers and their impact on nature.
No technical requirements are needed for the tour as an experienced glacier guide will teach you how to use basic glacier equipment, such as crampons and an ice axe which are provided for all our glacier walk tours. The unique experience of a glacier walk on one of the many retreating glaciers of the world is sure to leave lasting memories.
This is the glacial tongue then extends south from the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged rock formations shaped by the glacier.
Remember, this is a meet on location tour where you will be meeting at the Parking area in front of Sólheimajökull glacier 20 minutes before departure. You should also be prepared to display your ticket either in printed form or digital.
Dress appropriately for the weather and please be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes for this tour. Ensure that you have warm clothing for the time you are on the glacier as it can get very cold, it is also recommended that your clothing is as waterproof as possible.
This tour is 3 hours long including the time spent on the safety briefing and the hike itself.
Directions to Sólheimajökull Glacier:
Driving time: From Reykjavík: 2h 30min. From Vík: 45 min.
From the West (Reykjavík): 6 km after Skógar, you turn left (just after the bridge) onto road 221 and then follow road 221 for about 5 km to the Sólheimajökull Café parking area. (Expected 20 - 30 min. for this part).
From the East (Vík): 3 km after you pass road 222, you turn right (just before the bridge) onto road 221 and then follow road 221 for about 5 km to the Sólheimajökull Café parking area. (Expected 20 - 30 min. for this part).
