Join us for a day of fire and ice as we travel to both an ice and a lava cave!
Journey with us as we leave the city behind for a day of adventures. Ice caving and Lava caving all in one day!
Highlights:
Our action packed day begins with the most perilous part of the journey… Pickup! Genuinely this is as complicated as your day will get, and they best part is we will handle it all. Pickup is included in your price so simply let us know where to fetch you from and we will get you.
We can pick up from most hotels in the city and of course from the pickup points located in the city centre.
Once we have the hard part out of the way we will whisk you out of the city and into the Icelandic countryside. We will journey through a mixture of lava fields and farmland and before you know it you suddenly find yourself standing on top of an Ice Cap and about to begin your descent down below the surface to explore what lies beneath. In order to get there we step aboard a huge specially-modified truck and drive up the glacier to the cave.
The Ice Tunnel or Ice Cave is a man made glacier cave high up in a remote area in the highlands of Iceland. Your guide will explain how global warming has begun to affect the glacial environment and take you on a magical journey deep within the glacier. You get to see stunning blue glacier ice and wonderful glacier formations.
After our ice cave tour we get back on board the glacier truck and head back down. We eat lunch at Hotel Húsafell and then go on to explore the mightiest lava cave in Iceland, Víðgelmir before taking the scenic route home.
Langjökull, which translates as the “long glacier”, is the second largest icecap in Iceland. It is also the closest glacier to the city of reykjavik and sits at 4,000 ft (1,200 m) above sea level. The water from Langjökull eventually goes on to become the white river which feeds Gullfoss waterfall.
Víðgelmir is about 1600 metres / 5250ft long making it one of the largest lava caves in the world. Your guide will show and explain the amazing features of the cave, e.g. the wonderful colours, lava stalactites and stalagmites etc.

If you have booked a hotel pickup with Smartbus™, please be at your chosen pickup location 30 minutes before the departure of the tour. Look for the Green Smartbus™ which will be outside your accommodation at within the 30 minutes of pickup.
For your comfort: Since you will be entering an ice cave which is at 0° Celsius or 32° Fahrenheit we recommend not only warm clothing, but also waterproof clothing as well. Waterproof jacket and pants, headwear and gloves, and warm socks/waterproof shoes are essential for staying warm and dry during the visit into the ice cave.
Lunch: After the trip to the ice cave, you will only have a short break before heading to the lava tunnel so it is a good idea to bring some snacks or lunch for the way. Along the way we try to stop so that you have a chance to buy some food or drink along the way.
