Explore a stunning crystal ice cave in Europe's largest glacier Vatnajökulll.
THIS TOUR DEPARTS FROM JÖKULSÁRLÓN - 45 MINUTES EAST OF SKAFTAFELL
In autumn each year ice caves begin to take shape and last throughout the winter. Caves can be found in several different locations on the south side of Vatnajökull. These trips are somewhat temperature dependent as Ice-caves must be treated with the utmost respect in regards to the ceiling being supportive along with other factors that your specialized guide evaluates constantly.
2.5 hours duration
Minimum age 8
After about 25-30 minutes of driving on a 4 wheel drive road, we reach the edge of the glacier. Gear and safety instructions will be provided before entering the glacier and the ice cave.Included is all necessary glacier gear, including crampons, helmet, and harness. Your guide will evaluate each time which gear is necessary. Truly adventurous day for adventurous people with rewarding “once in a life time” experience! The ice cave tour departs from Glacier lagoon (Jökulsárlón) parking lot, coordinates N64 02.898 W16 10.795. This is just off of the main road #1 (Distance from Reykjavík is 370 km) about a 45 minute drive East of Skaftafell and a 45 minute drive West of Höfn. Groups normally visit one ice cave during the tour and this cave is selected based on conditions and safety.
Please note that you must arrange your transportation to the meeting point which is 5 hours east of Reykjavik. The bus schedule during the winter is very limited and will not get you to the meeting point so it is highly recommended to rent a car. Please bring warm layers and good hiking boots or shoes (sometimes the ground can be muddy and sometimes we may be required to wear crampons -spikes for the ice).
If you are looking for other options that include glacier exploration (focused on a glacier walk vs. photographing an ice cave) during the winter please check out the Blue Ice tour or Glaciers & Waterfalls which both include transportation to and from Reykjavik.
